This has tons of benefits: web browsing stays speedy, your Mac laptop won't get as hot, and your Mac's fan won't come on as often. Since Flash isn't loaded until you specifically ask for it, your CPU usage will stay at normal levels when browsing the web. The advantages of ClickToFlash are numerous. When you want to view the Flash, just click on it! If you're on a MacBook, ClickToFlash can also add to your effective battery life, making it definitely worth checking out.Įver wanted to get rid of the scourge of the web that is Adobe Flash, but still retain the ability to view Flash whenever you want? With ClickToFlash, you can! Using ClickToFlash, all of those icky Flash bits that have infected most webpages on the internets are replaced with a nice, smooth gradient and the word "Flash" set in a nice, pleasing font. If you're ever annoyed by Flash videos while surfing the Web (especially processor-intensive ads), ClickToFlash will be a welcome addition to your browsing experience. This functionality alone makes ClickToFlash worth installing, but this app adds a couple extras, too: you can set ClickToFlash to always load higher-quality H.264 videos from YouTube (the format used for YouTube on the iPhone), or you can even set it to automatically load HD video when available. You can then load the Flash video by just clicking the word "Flash," or you can access the settings and instruct ClickToFlash to load all Flash on the page or to add the video's source URL to a "whitelist" (so, for example, if you don't want ClickToFlash to ever block video from a site like YouTube or ESPN, you can just add that site to your whitelist and those videos will always load normally). Once installed, ClickToFlash blocks all Flash video, instead showing a gray box with the word "Flash" and small settings icon in the upper left corner wherever Flash would otherwise appear.

Last edit at 08:38PM by Jimmypoo.ClickToFlash is a free plug-in for Safari that can-in the words of the developers-"block evil Adobe Flash.the scourge of the Web." Indeed, ClickToFlash does an excellent job of blocking unwanted Flash video while still letting you watch Flash when you want to, which can result in better browser performance, fewer crashes, cooler running temperatures (and hence lass fan noise), and in the case of laptops, longer battery usage (in both the short term and over the life of a battery).ĬlickToFlash is easy to install and use. Late 2007 MacBook / x3100 / 144MB video, with 6GB of RAMĮdited 1 time(s). I ran both Cocktail and FreeMEM (twice - Cocktail is much faster than FreeMemory) - and there was a mere 100MB to return, vs what I was USED to, which was having to restart the machine to get back the 2GB it took away. Safari handled it all with just 500MB of RAM, and promptly emptied the cache, closed windows, RAM freed up - and when I closed Safari, I got back NEARLY ALL of the RAM. My RAM use DROPPED by nearly 1.5GB for my usual first task in the AM - which is to open two windows - and in the first, open 9 tabs, and in the second, open 36 tabs, plus some misc crap that opens up that ClickToFlash stops from rendering. Thats it What you do with that power is entirely up to you. It fixes the RAM use and the memory leaks BIG TIME. for those of you who HAVE NOT upgraded to Safari 5.1.2 - DO IT. I may try that before reposting - so I'll check two, with nothing else running but the browser.ītw. 1.1.0-4 (installed ) Safari Extensions: ClickToPlugin.safariextz - Marc. It skipped one test on my version - I don't really know what it was, or if FireFox can do it instead or if I'm missing an extension or what. Full test is about 5 minutes - interesting to watch, see Javascript and various game sprites in action. There is the alternative to Flash that Steve was clearly referring to with respect to HTML 5 and NOT using QT as the source. I didn't even know that certain CODECs for HTML 5 (or otherwise) existed, but Give it a try - am curious to know how graphics cards handle various aspect of things vs.

I'm running mine again - I was already doing something that was CPU semi-heavy, when I found it, but my first run with Safari 5.1.2 and 10.6.8 was "1062" points.
